Our Story

My grandfather, Floyd, and his family have called Keokuk County home for many generations, with deep roots in the area dating back to the 1800’s. In 1959, my grandparents, Floyd and Dorothy, purchased the home that would become the heart of the main farm, located on the west side of What Cheer. This property, which remains central to our family’s legacy, was where they raised their six children.

While my grandfather, Floyd, ventured into many different business opportunities throughout his life, his true passions always remained truck driving and farming. His love for the land and the lifestyle of a farmer was evident in everything he did, and these values were passed down to my father and, ultimately, to me. Throughout his life, Floyd exemplified a deep work ethic, a hands-on approach to everything he did, and an unwavering commitment to his family and the farm.

In the early years, as my father Raymond grew older, he began to develop his own vision for the farm’s future. Recognizing the potential for a successful beef operation, he took the bold step of starting our family’s beef cow herd. What began as a small operation quickly expanded as my father dedicated himself to raising high-quality cattle and improving the herd.

Over the years, he carefully selected breeding stock, focused on herd health and nutrition, and implemented modern farming practices to grow the operation into what it is today. His passion for the beef industry and his commitment to raising cattle with the best care and attention to detail have been a driving force in the farm’s success.

Our family’s farm, Adams Farm Inc., has been a place where hard work, tradition, and innovation have come together to shape the future of our agricultural business. I was incredibly fortunate to grow up on the farm, surrounded by the people who shaped its history and future. I had the unique privilege of spending every day working alongside both my grandfather and my father at Adams Farm Inc. With my grandfather, I learned the timeless farming techniques and work ethic that have been passed down through generations. His knowledge of the land and animals was immeasurable, and his guidance has left an indelible mark on me.

At the same time, I worked closely with my father, who was building and expanding our beef herd. I was able to witness firsthand his dedication to improving the operation, and learning the intricacies of cattle management, breeding, and care. Through these daily experiences, I not only developed a deeper connection to the farm but also learned invaluable lessons about responsibility, commitment, and the importance of hard work.

When it came time for college, I knew I wanted to continue the family tradition of farming while also ensuring that I could bring new skills and knowledge to the farm's future. I pursued a degree in Beef Production Management, where I gained a deeper understanding of modern beef industry practices, livestock care, and farm management techniques. This education provided me with the technical expertise to further enhance the farm’s operations and contribute to the growth of our beef herd.

Later, I chose to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Business to complement my agricultural background. I understood that in today’s competitive farming environment, it was essential to have a strong grasp of business principles to effectively manage the farm, streamline operations, and ensure its continued success. My business education has allowed me to bring strategic planning, financial management, and marketing skills to our family farm, helping to secure its future for generations to come.

The time spent working side-by-side with both my father and grandfather at Adams Farm Inc., combined with the knowledge I gained through my studies, has helped me develop a deep passion for both the practical and business aspects of farming. Their mentorship and shared love for the land have inspired me to continue their work and carry forward the values they instilled in me.

Today, my husband, Nate, and I are continuing this farming legacy together under the name of Phillips Family Farm. We are both committed to ensuring that our children—Amelia, age 13; Nash, age 9; and Ruby, age 4—grow up with a strong connection to the land and the values that have shaped our family.

We hope to pass on to them the same love for farming, hard work, and responsibility that was instilled in me by my father and grandfather. As we work side-by-side on Phillips Family Farm, we are building a future where our children can carry forward the traditions that have been passed down for generations, ensuring that the farm remains a thriving, vital part of our family for years to come.

Though Phillips Family Farm is now our own endeavor, I continue to work for Adams Farm Inc. alongside my dad, still deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm that my grandfather started and my father grew. This connection to both farms—Adams Farm Inc. and Phillips Family Farm—has allowed me to blend the legacy of my ancestors with the new ideas and passions that Nate and I are bringing to our own farm.

This rich family history of hard work, dedication, and love for farming has been passed down through the generations, and it continues to inspire me in every aspect of my life and work today. The legacy my grandfather started, and my father grew at Adams Farm Inc., has laid a strong foundation for our family’s future in farming, and I am proud to continue that tradition, ensuring that our farm continues to thrive for generations to come.
